Paleochora is larger and livelier, again with a year-round population but many more tourists. Sougia is a small, friendly village with a year-round population and plenty of good accommodation, including self-catering apartments and studios, and a huge, excellent beach, part coarse sand, part small pebbles. If you really want not to be in a place with lots of other tourists, then the far east (Sitia, Palekastro) as bobojnr suggests, is one answer. (In 1981 there was no beach, only a concrete jetty to swim of: the beach happened a few years later.) Like everywhere else, it has grown and changed a good deal, but is still, according to all reports, a small, friendly place with a couple of good tavernas and a made beach. Milatos (the paralia, or beach place, of the village of Milatos in the hills behind the beach) was our first taste of Crete: we stayed there for three weeks 34 years ago, and it was definitely not touristy then. places that have developed, and exist, for tourists. There is almost nowhere on Crete's north coast now that is un-touristy - being "near a beach" guarantees tourist resorts and tourists - though of course some are less touristy than others. >We don't want to be near a touristy place.< There are dozens of other places on Crete that would suit your needs but these are the first three to spring to mind that I have first hand knowledge of. The first is on a beach and pretty quiet, a few rooms with tavernas but no shops that I can remember, if you are not willing to drive it would mean getting a taxi there and back or alternatively there is the lovely inland village of Kamilare with both the beaches of Kamilaki & Kommos nearby, I say nearby but it would mean a 25 / 30 minute walk. Two other places both totally different and both on the south coast, that may suit you are Triopetra or Kamilare. If you want somewhere with a shorter journey from either of the main airports then you may wish to look at the south coast and the more rural or quieter you go for is going to restrict you travel options to and from. It is a beautiful working town with several beaches and coves within walking distance.

I would suggest you look at somewhere like Palekastro, it is a fair distance (only feasible if you are flying in to Heraklion) and would require a bus from Heraklion to Sitia and from there to Palekastro.
